MANIPUR: With recent tensions building up between India and Pakistan, the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), V. Narayanan, revealed that at least 10 satellites are working round-the-clock to safeguard the nation. Addressing the 5th Convocation Ceremony of Central Agricultural University, Imphal, Narayanan asserted that satellite and drone technologies are the backbones for defense in such a large, diverse country like India.
He pointed out the need for constant monitoring over the entire 7000-km-open coastline of India and also the northern borders. "You all know about our neighbours. If we have to ensure the safety of our country, we have to serve through our satellites,"
Narayanan said, indirectly hinting at the threat posed by increasing hostility with Pakistan. The statement came in the wake of India intercepting missile and drone attacks by Pakistan, shortly after India had launched precise attacks against alleged terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan administered Kashmir in reaction to the Pahalgam terror attack.
On Saturday, both countries agreed to stop all military actions against land, sea, and air so that further escalation could be avoided. Space technology used strategically is instrumental in such high-stake situations. It even included the role of ISRO beyond defense towards agriculture, telemedicine, education, weather forecasting, disaster management, and environmental monitoring.
